Biotechnology YES - Young Entrepeneurs Scheme

Winning Cambridge Bioscientists

What is Biotechnology YES?

The Biotechnology YES (Young Entrepreneurs Scheme) is an innovative competition developed to raise awareness of the commercialisation of bioscience ideas among postgraduate students/postdoctoral scientists.

The competition is funded by sponsorship and aims to encourage an entrepreneurial culture in the UK bioscience postgraduate and postdoctoral base for the benefit of the UK economy.

What does it involve?

The competition is run over three days (Wednesday - Friday). In the morning, of the first two days participants, grouped into teams of four to five members, attend presentations from leading figures in the biotechnology industry on all aspects of technology transfer and the commercialisation of bioscience ideas.

Topics covered include:

  • The Requirements of a Business Plan
  • Intellectual Property and Patenting Strategy
  • Raising and Managing Finance
  • Commercial and Marketing Strategies
  • Case Histories

This knowledge is then utilised by participants to prepare an oral business plan presentation for an "imaginary" biotech start-up company. The plan is prepared by the team, in the afternoon of the first two days, with each member assuming a different role within the company (e.g. Managing, Finance, Research and Development, Marketing or Operations Director).

On the final day the participants make a formal oral presentation of their business plan before a panel comprised of business, financial and academic representatives taking the role of venture capitalists. Two teams from each workshop are selected to progress through to the Final.

Winners of the competition receive ??1000, with other prizes also available.

When and where does the competition take place?

Participants will be fully briefed on what to expect at a briefing session held prior to the workshops in Nottingham by the competition organisers.

The regional workshops are held between September and November and the Final takes places in London in December.

What will the competition cost?

Biotechnology YES is free to most participants see FAQs for further information.

It will cost TIME, past participants have put a lot of effort and preparation into the competition, but the rewards are substantial in terms of the knowledge gained, networking opportunities and personal development.

Who organises the competition?

Biotechnology YES is organised jointly by the University of Nottingham Institute for Enterprise and Innovation (UNIEI) and the Business and Innovation Unit at Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
